Recap of Singapore Premier League 2023 Season: Albirex Niigata (S) Clinch Championship
Albirex Niigata (S) clinched the Singapore Premier League title in style by demolishing Hougang United in their final game. The champions celebrated their sixth triumph with a commanding victory, while Balestier Khalsa secured fourth place even after a loss to Tampines Rovers. Geylang International’s hopes for a top-four finish were dashed as they fell to Lion City Sailors in a dramatic contest. Brunei DPMM claimed seventh place by holding Tanjong Pagar United to a draw.
In the Tanjong Pagar vs. DPMM match, despite playing most of the game with ten men due to a red card for goalkeeper Kenji Rusydi, Tanjong Pagar managed to salvage a point with a second-half equalizer by substitute Marin Mudražija. DPMM finished in seventh place, their lowest position since 2017.
Balestier Khalsa faced a late defeat against Tampines Rovers, with goals coming in injury time to secure the win for the Stags. Balestier finished fourth, their highest position in the SPL since 2015. Taniguchi and Nakamura scored crucial goals for Tampines, with Ang making his first professional start.
The final match saw Albirex Niigata (S) complete their season with a dominant 5-0 victory over Hougang United. Kunori’s early brace set the tone for Albirex, who ended the campaign with seven straight wins and a 14-match unbeaten streak. Hougang had no answer to Albirex’s clinical finishing, as Lee, Yoshimura, and Kunori all found the back of the net.
In the Sailors vs. Geylang clash, Geylang took a surprise lead through Yamaya’s header, but the Sailors fought back strongly in the second half to secure a 3-1 victory. Shawal, Hami, and Pashia were on target for the Sailors, who finished the season with five consecutive wins. Shawal reached double digits in goals for the season, while Pashia scored in consecutive games for the first time since 2021.
Overall, the conclusion of the 2023 SPL season produced thrilling matches and exciting storylines, with Albirex Niigata (S) emerging as the deserving champions.
